Dating from 1874, this house was home to the stepmother of Sir George Hayter Chubb, later 1st Baron Hayter, for many years Chairman and Managing Director of the Chubb and Sons Lock and Safe Co Ltd, which had been established by his grandfather in the early 19th century. Sir George himself lived in nearby Newlands. The name of the house is a pun on the family name: chevender was a Middle English version of the word chavender, itself an alternative name for the freshwater fish, the chub.
