The plaque on the wall of Cowane's Hospital states: "This building was constructed between 1637 and 1649 as an almshouse for poor members of the merchant guild. It was endowed by John Cowane, a Stirling merchant, who had been the town's Commissioner to the Scots parliament. As midnight strikes at New Year the statue of Cowane - known as Auld Staney Breeks - comes down to dance in the courtyard!"
