The really important part of this photo is in the foreground. There you will see some stones which are all that remains of a mining village called Arden Rows. This village had a population of 646 in 1846 and had its own school. The population steadily declined after this peak and eventually as the local pits closed the miners and their families moved on, the last families moving out in 1931.
