The date above the door lintel is 1827, two years before the almost contemporaneous 'West Port Murders' trial. The accused Burke and Hare were not, however, as far as is known, body-snatchers, as they had found murder to be a more convenient method of obtaining fresh corpses to be sold to the doctors for medical dissection.
