Only in high summer does the sun illuminate the north-facing elevations of the buildings on the Royal Mile. The prominent landmarks are the crown steeple of St Giles Cathedral on the left, the headquarters of the Bank of Scotland in the centre, and the spire of the Highland Kirk, now the Hub, on the right.
