To this day there is no Public House in Loughgall. The Copes at some stage in the past actively discouraged the sale and consumption of intoxicating liquor by buying the nine Public Houses in the village and closing them down. In their place they established a Coffee House and Reading Room, which is it pictured here. Workers were given tokens from the Copes to spend in the village, they couldn't be used anywhere else. I can't verify this but I am informed that during WWII, the occupying GIs frequented the Coffee House, and the locals were prohibited from it.
