Friends' (Quakers) headstones were all of standard design and carried just the name of the deceased, the date of death and age at death. Quakers never used month names because the names had pagan origins so the date of death was given in the form '11th Month 21st 1866'. The burial ground at Hitchin contains many names prominent in business in the town in the 18th and 19th centuries, including Tuke, Sharples, Ransom, Exton and Lucas.
