A Quaker venture into alternative venues in Chester to the pub led them to set up a number of Cocoa Houses. Unfortunately, temperance zeal overcame consumer research and the ventures have long since closed. The fine signs are still preserved though. For a close up of them and some more info. on the Chester Cocoa Houses have a look at this :- http://www.chesterwalls.info/cocoahouses.html And from this site I see that the Italian restaurant which was here when I took this a few months ago has now been replaced by a bar called Kash, run by the Beer Republic. Cue sound of Quakers turning in graves, etc..... It's a good link, with a nice cynical style to it. Give it a look.
