Ship Canal at Barton

Looking east along the Manchester Ship Canal at Barton upon Irwell. Barton Road Bridge in the distance. Forty years ago, as a child, I played here. No swans then. The canal was murky and smelly with a thick oily layer over the water and the banks were coated with an oily residue. Now there are fish in the water!
