The Priory Church of St Mary the Virgin and St Michael at Cartmel was built by the Augustinians between 1190 and 1220. A great part of the Priory was destroyed at The Dissolution of the Monasteries, but the church remains as the parish church The upper part of the tower is a Perpendicular addition that is turned through 45º, so that its weight is not directly above the walls below, but is supported on arches set diagonally in the top of the lower tower.
