The Canterbury City Council blue plaque reads "1st Earl Kitchener of Khartoum 1850-1916 Soldier and Statesman lived here 1911-1916". Lord Kitchener was a general who gained notoriety in the First World War. He featured on the famous poster "Your Country Needs You".
