Charlton House was built during the reign of James I and is the finest Jacobean house in the London area. Writing in Nairn's London, Ian Nairn wrote of Charlton House: "Charlton has the spark that so many more famous Jacobean houses lack. The curly detail means something, the irregular outline has real spirit, gleaming in the sun at the end of the humdrum suburban road from Blackheath. It is like finding an epigram in the middle of an official report." This view from the east is less commonly seen than the approach to the front along Charlton Road. Charlton Park stretches away to the east of the house but largely consists of sports pitches.
