Built as a private house called Franklyns in the 1840s it was purchased by Brighton Borough Mental Hospital between the wars for private fee paying patients and was retained by the Princess Royal Hospital when the former, which had become St Francis Hospital in 1948, was closed in 1995. It is now located at the entrance to the hospital next to the A272.
