A characteristic townscape of stone. This area is part of the Howick Street development of the 1830s, created by William Smith as an upmarket suburb with uniform specifications. His creations include the former Mechanics Institute with its grand facade of giant Doric pilasters. A plaque records its noble purpose: "ERECTED 1831 BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION FOR 'DIFFUSING KNOWLEDGE AMONG ARTISANS'." Grade II* listed.
