Looking north-east towards the Hawkhope area of Kielder Forest. Part of the hydro-electric plant is just visible on the far left. Kielder Forest is the largest forest in England, and the largest man-made forest in Europe. It is owned and managed by the Forestry Commission which began planting in the 1920s on what was then mostly moorland. Most of the trees are conifers, with three-quarters of the area covered by Sitka Spruce, favoured because it is fast-growing, hardy and produces good quality timber.
