According to Wivelsfield's 1843 tithe map this area between Hurstwood Lane marked by the trees in the distance and Colwell Lane to the south was wooded with much of it grubbed between that date and 1875 with the last section in the foreground, by then known as Asylum Wood, going in the 1950s.
