When this photograph was taken, most of the old Market Hall, dating from 1892, had been demolished. What remained were the lower levels of the exterior walls, plus surprisingly some shop units fronting Commercial Road. Inside the site were piles of rubble. In an article in the Swindon Advertiser of the 20th July 2009, Frances Bevan mentions that the hall was demolished in 1977. As this photograph, one of a set, was clearly taken not long after most of the demolition had taken place, it must date from that year. The road on the left is Market Street, which still exists. What happened to the market traders, after this hall was demolished, is too involved to go into here, but there is a photo of what is now on this site by Brian Robert Marshall:- Image Image Image Image Image Image
