Scores of men and women met their end here. The last person to be hung inside the Hanging Tower (a part of the town wall) was William Murphy (42), an Irish labourer and ex-soldier. On 25th. January, 1910, he had been found guilty at Beaumaris Assizes of the murder, at Holyhead, of his mistress, Gwen Elin Jones, on Christmas Day 1909, and on the 15th February he paid the penalty. Justice was swift in those days. A photo of the unfortunate Murphy can be seen on the following link. The tower is reputed to be haunted. http://www.caernarfononline.co.uk/christmas/ghost2.html
