The Charterhouse, in this context, refers to the public house which occupies the very acute street angle ahead. Confusingly, both the broad way to the right, and the barred-off street to the left, are named Charterhouse Street, as is the road behind the photographer. Up ahead, both arms of Charterhouse Street quickly become Charterhouse Square as the next block is reached. Confused? You should be!
