As part of a search for an old family cottage I walked down and then back up this part of an ancient roadway and appreciated why it got the name. I was struck by the poor condition of the surface and attracted by the sign at the bottom. Unfortunately I was unable to be sure that I found the old house I was looking for as all that was left of any age had been converted into a stable close to a new house.
