Opened in 1856, Gipsy Hill is the name of the road which crosses the railway outside the station, which in turn takes its name from the gipsies who used to live in the area. The Queen of the Gipsies was Margaret Finch who lived in a house nearby. She was born in 1636 and died in 1740. Beyond the station ahead is the Crystal Palace Tunnel which passes under the highest part of the Crystal Palace Ridge.
