Viewed from a footbridge http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1473828 between Tunnel Terrace (on the right edge of the view) and Albert Terrace. Newport railway station is a few tens of metres behind the camera. The tunnels are about 700 metres (770 yards) long. The two portals are markedly different in design. The one on the left was opened in 1848 as part of the Gloucester to Carmarthen broad gauge route, built by the South Wales Railway and sponsored by the Great Western Railway. The portal on the right is a much later addition (1910), when the route was widened to 4 tracks. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1441421 to a view of the other end of the tunnels.
