The small roundabout was introduced when the new Prospect View doctors' surgery was built (just to the left of the picture). The road climbing uphill towards Great Malvern is the upper section of Madresfield Road. The tall, solid brick wall is all that remains of the old Malvern Gas Works that stood on the surgery site. The gasworks opened in 1856 and to mark the occasion a fire was lit on the top of Worcestershire Beacon - a practice normally reserved for great state occasions such as the Queen's Jubilee.
