Up to recently it was found in a wooded area of the common but as can be seen much of that has been cleared and the marker is now in the open. It was commissioned in 1953 by the then lord of the manor of Balneath, Ivor Grantham. The inscription reads: "1953 THIS STONE HAS BEEN ERECTED ON LANE END COMMON IN THE PARISH OF CHAILEY NEAR THE CENTRE OF SUSSEX 159 FEET ABOVE SEA LEVEL TO MARK THE POINT WHERE THE GREENWICH MERIDIAN CROSSES THE MANOR OF BALNEATH"
