The view north past houses built c1900 towards a detached house on the far side. Kelly's 1901 Directory of Monmouthshire records that the detached house was the business premises of William Frederick Sumner, boot & shoe & coal dealer. There are other references to businesses and shops in Commercial Street in 1901. This is in contrast to 2011, when the street is mainly residential.
