Through the arch of Thompson's Bridge is Stoke Top Lock, No 28. The Stoke flight of six enables a water rise of 42 feet (12.8 metres) over about 1400 metres. Not far ahead is the much steeper and considerable Tardebigge flight. A close look at the image will reveal that the left gate is already open. The ratchet of the visible gate paddle is up, showing that the water has been let out of the lock through a hole in the gate. The narrowboat waiting to enter the chamber has deliberately been prevented from nudging the gate ... (ahem!). Well I couldn't get a picture from a moving boat, could I? ... ahem again!
