Betchworth Castle

The history of the site goes back to at least 1377 when Sir John Fitzalan was given permission to build a fortified house here, although there may have been a previous castle here, given its site overlooking the River Mole. It was rebuilt in the mid 15th century, and saw subsequent additions and alterations in the 18th century. Following purchase by Henry Hope in 1834, it was allowed to fall into disrepair, with masonry removed for use elsewhere.
