Looking towards the east promenade from near the land end of the pier. Although the top of the beach profile in this direction does become more shingly to the east, plenty of sand is available when the tide is not at its highest. The wooden groynes help prevent erosion and long-shore drift of beach material to the east. The distinctive dome of the Edwardian Dome Cinema (Grade II* listed) is still the tallest building on the seafront. An interesting comparison of the centre part of this image can be made with the 1950s picture taken nearer the shore. Image
