A memorial to 38 men and boys (youngest only 10 years old) killed in the explosion at Stargate Colliery (also called Townley Main)Image on 30 May 1826. The memorial was installed by the Ryton Heritage Group in 1993. The plaque is inscribed with the following lines based on Job 28: "Remote from where people live Men with lamps dig a shaft A place where there is no foothold And hang suspended far from mankind. They put a limit to the darkness Piercing the black and lightless rock. Searching the depths of the earth. Driving tunnels through the stone Men dig the hardest rocks To bring to daylight secrets that were hidden. Their eyes see all its treasure But where can wisdom be found?
