The fort was built as part of Lord Palmerston's defensive improvements along the south coast in the 1870s and is the largest defensive work ever constructed in Sussex. This is the north side, incorporating soldiers barracks around a sloping (interesting) parade ground and hidden from the town to the north by a large mound of earth.
