Part of the garden of Beltwood, Sydenham Hill, SE26. This remarkable house was built in 1854 and survives today with its grounds and lodge. Sadly, its last owner proved to be too eccentric, keeping a menagerie of animals including many dogs that roamed the area in packs, and peacocks, one of which used to strut up and down Crescent Wood Road, doubtless causing a few people leaving the Dulwich Wood House pub to question whether they had drunk too much! The owner was handed down an ASBO for neglect of her animals but she fled back to the USA in 2007, leaving the house to its fate, whatever that might be. When she tried to re-enter the UK, she was arrested and sentenced to 100 days of unpaid work. Watch this space!
