Most of the pubs of this name stand near the site of an ancient maypole; the decorated pole bedecked with streamers, around which dancers move gracefully on May Day. Such celebrations are very ancient in origin and were considered to be pagan by the Puritans, who suppressed them. They survive nevertheless in many areas, where a May Queen is still elected annually.
