The viewpoint is a landscaped colliery waste heap. Wigan top lock is on the right where there are trees. From that point to just about the left margin of the view runs the stub-end of the Lancaster Canal, passing this side of the large industrial building in the centre, and the far side of the reservoir. The former course of the Springs Branch railway crosses this at right angles (bridge removed) and along the margin of the reservoir in the view centre.
