The wall in the foreground marks the remains of the main buildings of Grime Bridge colliery, which operated from 1851 to 1962. This is the site of the original No. 1 pit which worked the Lower Mountain Mine on the east side of the Bacup fault. The main buildings were demolished and tipped down the shaft in 1954 although the colliery continued to work the No. 2 and No. 3 drifts.
