Park Pale, Slindon Wood

The remains of a medieval pale built by the then owners of Slindon House, the Archbishop of Canterbury. The pale was an embankment which would have had wooden stakes pointing inwards next to a deep ditch to prevent deer jumping out. A shallower ditch on the outside allowed deer to jump in. This part lies next to the point where it is crossed by a track and retains a much greater depth on the inward side compared to that further north.
