Ancient crane at 'The Vaults'

The crane was used to lower barrels of wine to the vaults below. The rubble building known as The Vaults dates from 1682 although Leith's wine trade with Bordeaux dates from much earlier. As a notice high on the building states a fourth storey was 'compleated by John Thomson and Alexander Sommervail in the year 1785'.The undercroft with vaulted wine cellars are thought to date from the 16th century.
