The notice board is by the shops. The village is known locally as Catney Barnes, often abbreviated to Catney. This is why the name Catney appears on the board. This usage has continued since at least the 19th century. The name Catherine-de-Barnes is believed to have originated in the name of a 12th century lord of the manor named Ketelberne. Quite how this developed into Catherine-de-Barnes isn't clear. But it's interesting that a name probably derived from Norman origins has survived.
