St John's church > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2065228 is situated by the junction of Ber Street and Finkelgate. A church stood on this site before 1066 and its original dedication was to St John the Baptist. Its additional dedication to the Holy Sepulchre dates from 1096. At some time in the past the corner of the chancel was chopped back to allow for heavy market traffic, and a massive brick arch at the end of the nave, above the chancel roof, was built to reduce the weight on the chancel arch inside. During the Reformation the church's stained glass windows were replaced by clear glass, the rood screen was sold and the wallpaintings were whitewashed. The original East Anglian-style font > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2065275 with carved lions grouped around its stem is still in place. In the 19th century the church was restored in medieval style and the chancel screen > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2065239 and east window date from this time. The reredos > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2065258 is by architect John Oldrid Scott . St John's church became redundant in 1984 and is presently unused. It was used by an Eastern Orthodox congregation from 1986 to 2009 and called St John the Theologian during this time.
