Sentinel geared vertical boilered tank engine at Northamptonshire Ironstone Railway Trust. Most steam locomotives have their pistons directly attached to cranks on the driving wheel, thus there is no gearing. A geared locomotive is suitable for a situation requiring a low speed locomotive with ample starting tractive effort such as a quarry or inclined line.
