Stanground Lock (or Sluice) controls access to the Middle Level from the River Nene. Although its primary purpose is to control water flows, it is the first significant feature encountered by boaters wishing to use the Middle Level Navigation from the direction of the main canal network, having come down the River Nene from Northampton.
