View northward, towards Leeds, York etc.; ex-Midland main trunk line, London - Leicester/Nottingham and Bristol - Birmingham - Derby - Sheffield - Leeds/York - Carlisle. The train is the Up 'Waverley', 10.15 Edinburgh via Carlisle - London St Pancras, with Stanier Class 5 No. 44871 piloting BR/Sulzer Type 4 1-Co-Co-1 2,500hp Diesel No. 157 (later Class 46 No. 46.020). The Diesel may have been 'unwell', as those early series locomotives often were. No. 44871 survived until 1967 and is preserved on the East Lancashire Railway.
