The inscription on this cast iron sewer manhole cover - also found elsewhere in the area - is "E Hargreaves & Co - Iron Founders - Water Lane - Halifax". Until perhaps the 1970s/80s, many castings for public utilities were made by small local firms, but many of them have closed in recent decades. This company however is still in business, and still at Water Lane Image According to their website http://www.hargreavesfoundry.co.uk/ they were founded in 1896, but many of their products are no longer made in the UK.
