In his architectural guide to the Borders and Berwick, Charles Alexander Strang described this building thus: "Police and Magistrates Court, 1899-1901, R. Burns Dick, following a competition, is ebullient but thoughtful baroque-nouveau which contributes positively to the townscape with its highly modelled frontage."
