Beales the department store has occupied this site since at least 1881, although this building dates from after the Second World War, during which its predecessor was destroyed. Beales was one of the founder members of the town's Chamber of Trade and Industry and I believe its phone number was Bournemouth 1 many, many years ago. The short first stretch of Hinton Road, to the left, has been renamed Beale Place in recent years.
