A closer view of the semi-circular Roman bastion tower base at Roman street level. One can see the steps leading down from the present day street level. This western tower protruding from the outer Roman wall formed part of the Roman north gate complex. A bastion sister tower would have stood on the east side of Ermine Street Roman gate, flanking its two small pedestrian arch tunnels and the larger arch tunnel for Roman traffic. What now remains of this once grand Roman gate complex is still magnificent to our eyes. The modern name being the 'Newport Arch'.
