The River Laver is the main tributary of the Skell, the two rivers meeting on the outskirts of Ripon. The Laver has a strange course, and just south of here comes within 3/4 of a mile of joining the Skell at Grantley Hall. A through valley connects the two rivers, this possibly being formed by glacial meltwaters. Several such valleys, some with 'misfit' streams occur to the west of Ripon.
