The building to which is attached used to be a savings bank. The face, visible in this image, http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2000055 appears on the Southgate Street elevation. The precise meaning of the faces is open to speculation. This one could symbolise fruitfulness with what look like walnuts, ears of maize, plums and tomatoes. The bird looks like a dove.
