New apartment blocks on the former site of Newburn Steel Works. The courtyard behind is shown here Image Spencer's Steelworks was established at Millfield in 1822 in a former water-powered corn mill. It was eventually replaced by steam power, the New Burn was culverted, and Spencer's workshops and factories spread down the valley to the River Tyne. The business was once world-renowned for quality steel plate and a rival to Sheffield.
