Also known as the Stone Bumblebee or Large Red Bumblebee it's scientific name is Pyrobombus lapidarius. Though many bees are quite specific as to the type of food plant they exploit this is known to utilise some 200 species. Perhaps this and the apparent overall increase in UK temperature is the reason for recent spread in its geographical distribution.
