Rising in the Cant Hills north of Shotts, the River Almond once had the dubious honour of being one of the most polluted rivers in Scotland. The source of this pollution was the industrial enterprises that sprang up along its banks, as well as iron deposits from leaking mine water near Harthill. However, thanks to proper management, as well as the decline of these industries, the River Almond is gradually becoming a much cleaner watercourse.
